Year 5-Remote Learning Page

This is the page that we will be using for Remote Learning this year. This could be in the form whole class/school closure due to a Covid-19 outbreak, or for individuals who have to isolate when waiting for a test or following a positive test in the household. A letter about our Remote Education this year, along with login codes for various platforms and an exercise book were all sent home earlier in the year.

Take care and stay safe,

Mr Wilson

Math

LO: We are learning to multiply three numbers together

In today's maths, we will be learning how to use our times tables knowledge to multiply three 10digit numbers together (e.g. 4 x 5 x 3 = ?). Please watch the video on this link to learn how to solve problems like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b4gqMHkvuUc

Now pick from the three activities below depending on how confident you feel with this skill. The teacher on the video mentions using the column method, but today we are going to be solving the calculations in our heads using different mental strategies (e.g. times tables facts, doubling then doubling again for x4, multiply by 10 then halve when x5 etc.).

The answer sheets are also attached below. Use these to mark your work, and feel free to let your grown-ups have a little look at these if they need to see the types of answers I am looking for. Remember that you may have written a multiplication the 'other way round' to my answers, and it can still be correct (e.g. 3 x 12 and 12 x 3 are equal as they are commutative). Marked work on SS, please x

Tuesday 3rd November 2020

We hope you had a lovely half term, and we will certainly miss you in class this week! Please check this page each day for your learning, just like you did during the full school closure earlier in the year.

Maths

LO: We are learning to calculate multiples of 10, 100 and 1,000

Today, we will be looking at the impact place holders have on multiplication and division facts. We have looked at this a little during our 'MAD Maths' sessions this year, but we thought it would be good to spend a lesson consolidating our understanding. Remember...

3 x 5 = 15

3 x 50 = 150 (multiply by five, then by ten!)

30 x 50 = 1,500

3 x 0.5 = 1.5 (multiply by five, then divide by ten!) etc.

Below you will find the red, amber and green activities (just like we have in class- Green is the most tricky!). Look through them and then decide the correct job for your confidence with this skill. I have also uploaded an answer sheet for each job, so once you have completed your work I would like you to mark the work. A photo of this work should then be uploaded to Seesaw with 'Remote Learning' and 'Maths' tagged, please x

LO: We are learning to use Relative Clauses

Good morning! Please find your learning for today below, please upload a pic to SS and tag 'Remote Learning'/ 'Eng' when completed. We are so proud! :)

Reading

LO: Tell us about what you're reading at home

Using SS, please let us know what you've been reading at home - would you recommend this book to anyone else/ why/ why not/ who is the author/ what is the genre? You could do this as a video, or as a poster, or both. Please upload to SS. You may also wish to complete some online reading (your passcodes etc are in your RL book).

Maths 1

LO: We are learning to solve multi-step problems

For the main maths lesson today, we would like you to have a go at the activities on the sheet below. You will need to apply addition and subtraction knowledge, and each question requires you to use more than one step in order to find the final answer. Make sure you read through each question more than once to truly understand what it is asking you to do :) Photo of your marked maths on SS, please x

Maths 2

Today is the last lesson in our maths unit of 'addition and subtraction'. We have covered lots of different skills in this unit, such as formal written methods, word problems, estimating, inverses etc. To finish this unit, we would like you to independently complete the 'end of unit assessment' below. This is so we can see the progress each child has made, as well as to identify areas of the unit we still need to work on in school. Photo to SS as normal, please :)

Maths

LO: We are learning to solve balancing problems

In maths today, we will be applying our number and inverse knowledge to 'balancing problems'. In a balancing problem, there is a calculation on both sides of the equals symbol. It is our job to make both sides equal the same amount so they are 'balanced'! Firstly, you must solve the side with both numbers on, and then solve the remaining calculation as a missing number problem. Double check at the end that both sides would have the same answer. Once complete, a photo to SS please.

English

LO: We are learning to add information to a sentence suing an embedded clause

We have been doing some learning linked to how relative pronouns (who, which, when, where etc.) can be used to add information to a simple sentence. Today we will be applying that learning to create longer and more exciting sentences by 'dropping in' an extra clause!  Instructions are on the sheet, and we would like a photo of your work uploading to SS please.

Reading

LO: We are learning to analyse a text using Bookflix skills

For today's reading, we would like you to please analyse the text below. It is a piece of poetry, so the way you analyse it will be slightly different to when you look at fiction and non-fiction texts!

1) Read the title and look at the pictures and layout. From this, write two 'I wonder' and two 'I predict' statements about the text.

2) Read the text in full, using 'annotate' and 'circle and fix' as you go.

3) Think of an alternative 'headline' for the text.

4) 'Summarise in 5'- What are the five main points/events within the poem?

Please upload a photo to SS once you have completed the work :)

Science

LO: We are learning to design an exercise plan for a healthy lifestyle

In Science, we have been learning about how the body stays fit and healthy. It is recommended that children take part in an hour of exercise every day, so your job today is to create 7-day exercise plan for a 10-year old who would like to try lots of new, fun ways of keeping fit! Try to include a range of individual activities, team sports, those they could do for free, clubs, family activities etc. Give some examples of which exercises they could do within each activity and maybe some challenges to complete. You could even add in some healthy snack ideas!

I don't mind how you present this work. It could be on paper, SS, Adobe Spark video etc., but however you present it, make sure we can see the wonderful finished product on SS please :)

Reading

LO: We are learning to analyse a text using Bookflix skills.

Please find below a non-fiction text all about Ancient Greece. Please try to use: circle and fix, annotate, thought-talk, summarise in 5 and any other skills you'd like to get a real understanding of the text :) Please take a picture of your learning and upload to SeeSaw!

Maths

LO: We are learning to solve problems involving inverses

Today's maths will be to apply the inverse learning from Monday and Tuesday to some different types of problem. Take your time and read each problem really carefully, as some are quite tricky! Photo to Seesaw when marked please.

Maths Assessment

We would also like you to have a go at the weekly mini maths assessment today please. You will now be starting to work on the Y5 assessment sheets, so please don't worry if you don't understand some of the questions or if your score is a lot lower than in previous weeks. We haven't taught you everything on here yet! As last week, if you could upload a photo to Seesaw of your marked work, then I will pick three areas of learning for you to work on for homework :)

RE

LO: We are learning to collect information about the Jewish festival of Hanukkah

As you know, our RE topic for this half term has been all about the religion of Judaism! Today, I would like you to watch the film clip below, and make notes under each of the following headings (remembering that you don't need to write in full sentences!):

  • When is Hanukkah celebrated?
  • How did Hanukkah begin?
  • How do Jewish people celebrate Hanukkah?

There is lots of information on this video, a lot of which doesn't fit under any of these headings. Therefore please don't feel that you have to write down every bit of information given, just the parts which fit!

Maths

LO: We are learning to use inverse operations to calculate a starting number

Yesterday's inverse understanding was brilliant! Today, you will be applying that knowledge to solve a different style of problem. In each puzzle, there is a mystery starting number, and you have to find out what it is by working backwards from the answer. For example, if it said ? + 4 = 10, you would work backwards from 10 and use the inverse operation to do 10 - 4 =... 6! Take your time and make sure you do them in order from the end backwards. Your answers are on the last page of the document. Photo to Seesaw as usual, please :)

PE/Science

LO: We are learning to explore how our heartrate is affected by exercise

Today, we will be continuing our fitness test in PE. Please find your pulse (like we learnt at school last week) and take your resting heat rate over a minute. I would then like you to warm up and complete the following activities over 30 seconds each. How many can you complete? Remember to take a little rest in between each exercise!

  • Star jumps
  • Sit ups
  • Press ups
  • Burpees
  • Squat jumps
  • Lunges
  • Mountain climbers

If you have forgotten how to do any of the exercises, please feel free to use the internet to look for examples. Take your heart rate at the end of the lesson. If you have been working hard, it should be much higher than it was before! Please upload a photo of your notes of how many of each exercise you managed to SS, and I will pop them into your table in your science book :)

English and Reading
