Reading

Log into Bug Club and read some of a new book or perhaps a book you enjoyed which is now in your library

Phonics

We are practising oi today, using the oi spelling.  On Seesaw there is an activity ‘Listen and Write’

Maths

Remember to log in to Doodle Maths.

https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/growing-6-7-8-week-3/

Scroll down to session 2.  If you don’t have playdough you could use lengths of string or wool, or gift ribbon.  Make sure you check.

Measure some lengths using objects.  Which is longest?  Which is shortest?  Which has more paperclips (or pasta) – which has fewer?

Take a photograph and upload it to Seesaw.

This is an introduction to measuring and focusses on the language of comparing.  We do not introduce standard units of measurement until Year 1.

Topic (and spot the oi words)

Tomorrow in school we will be cooking and eating pancakes – Mr Wilson is planning on joining in!  Although the real Pancake Day is next Tuesday because it’s in half term we would have been unable to join in.  So I’ve got my oil (for frying) and my foil (for keeping them warm).

So today's task is Design a pancake.

Imagine you wanted to make a fantastic pancake for someone special?  What will your topping be?

Can you draw your topping and label it?

Tell me who it is for, too!  You could do this on Seesaw or in your Home Learning Book.

Tomorrow we will be finding out why we have Pancake Day.

Enjoy this book – Mr Wolf’s Pancakes.

Wednesday 10th February

Hello everyone!  We had great fun making Fossils in school yesterday - we even let the Year 1 Key Worker children have a go, too!  I was in school so I'm a little behind on Seesaw but I'm hoping to catch up today.

PREPARATION FOR THE NEXT HALF TERM - Can you save some boxes to use in maths - we need boxes that are cubes, cuboids, cylinders and cones if you can find any!  We will also need some spheres too.  Two of each shape would be fantastic.

That’s Not My Dinosaur

You can use the activity on Seesaw you create your very own e-book!  I’ve put a few dinosaurs on there to start with but if you want to change the pictures that is fine.  Tell the reader why a dinosaur is NOT your dinosaur then why the last one is!  This is an opportunity to use your imagination.

SAFER INTERNET DAY

Reading – Wow some busy bees did lots of reading yesterday so I have allocated more books for you again..(mock groan).  Actually I have been very impressed by how many of you are quickly moving through the books.  The more you read – the better reader you will be!

English

Today we are learning OW (as in owl)

The action is pretending your finger is a needle pricking your thumb and saying ow.

Write ow on your home learning book.

On Phonics Play go to Buried Treasure Phase 3 and click on +ow.  (File below to help you find it)

This will bring up some Real and Fake words to read – put the Fake ones in the bin and the Real words in the Treasure Chest.  Fake words are used to check that the children can read the sounds and blend them even if they have never seen that word before.  There are 10 words to read.

Username jan21  password home

On Seesaw there are some sentences to read.   If you can record your reading that would be great!

Maths – We’re doing a little work on numbers up to 8

As a warm up can you practise writing your numbers in your Home Learning Book.

We are using the Part Whole models today … how many different ways can you represent the number 8 on the Part Whole model?

It would be useful to have some practical equipment to help organise your ideas – beads, buttons, pasta or lego blocks work well.

Remember to log in to Doodle Maths.

 Topic

We are making our fossils in school today.  I made some yesterday, at home, to check if they could be baked dry in the oven – and they can.  Check instructions from yesterday.  If you don’t have any coffee you could try adding play sand, or couscous, to give your rocks texture – but I haven’t tried this.  My two ‘rocks’ took about 3 hours to bake.

If you don’t/can’t make fossils there is the dinosaur skeleton activity I uploaded on Monday, as I know some of you haven’t done this yet.

 Safer Internet Day

There a powerpoint story which you could share with your child which highlights the dangers associated with pop ups on tablets.

For Safer Internet Day here is a powerpoint story about Smartie the Penguin and some of the problems he has with his new tablet - and how he learns who he can ask for help.    This is a resource published by Childnet.  There is a wealth of resources online - you might find this link interesting https://www.saferinternet.org.uk/safer-internet-day/2021

Monday 8th February 2021

This week in Reception I hope that we are able to take part in Safer Internet Day on Tuesday.  The internet is a fantastic resource but it can also be used for unkind or even illegal purposes.  As the children go through school we aim to teach them how to be critical and sensible users of the internet and, with our younger children in particular,  we work with them on understanding how to use it safely.   We are also making 'fossils' with the children in school - I will post links and instructions so that you can do this at home too.  And, as Pancake Day is coming up next week we will be making (and eating) pancakes in school and learning why we have Pancake day.

FOSSIL UPDATE

I have made my fossils and I am experimenting with baking them in the oven, as I don't have an airing cupboard.  They are on a baking tray lined with parchment.  Using the least amount of cold coffee (or water) that you can would be a good idea - and you can always re-roll the dough and have another try if the fossil impression isn't too good.   Kneading is definitely important - and not as messy as it might seem as the dough sticks to itself more than your fingers - as long as it's not too wet.

Fossil update 2

They can be baked in the oven - 2-3 hours at 200 deg C (the thickness of the 'rock' will affect baking time).  Here is one of my fossils - can you guess what they are?

Reading

I’ve been onto Bug Club and allocated lots of new books – please log in and do some reading!

English

Practise the sounds you have already learned – Phonics Play Speed Trial – instructions in the file list below.

Today we are looking at the sound ur.  This has the same action as the sound er (because it sounds the same).  Usually er is found at the end of words and ur at the beginning or in the middle.  Unfortunately there are exceptions!

Have a go at writing ur in your Home Learning book.

On Seesaw there are some words to add soundbuttons to.

On Seesaw there are some sentences to read.

Maths

Practise counting – forwards from 1-20

Backwards from 10 – 1 and maybe even 15 – 1 or  20 – 1.  Please make sure you’re really secure with counting back from 10 first.

In maths there is a Part-Whole activity on Seesaw.  We use part-Whole Models in school, starting with one whole and two parts, and images in the part whole model,  to help the children understand that numbers can be split into different, smaller numbers.  Later on this will help with understanding addition and subtraction.   If your child wants to use practical equipment, such as cubes , beads or buttons to help 'picture' the numbers that would be a great idea!

Oh and don’t forget to log into Doodle Maths!

Topic

On Tuesday I will be working with the Key Worker children in school to make fossils.  Here is a link to the activity to show you what you need.  If you wish to do this you can pick the day to suit yourselves – I would love to see your finished fossils!

Friday afternoon message

It's been a busy week in Reception.  I'm just working through Seesaw posts now - I was in school yesterday and I have been doing some online training this morning so I'm getting to it a little later than I would have liked.  I apologise for posting an activity twice - and not posting one at all; it should all now have been rectified.  I hope you're liking the 'Stars of yesterday' idea!

Thank you to so many of you at home for joining in with the cookie baking - I made a batch in school, too (to test the oven etc) and they were VERY popular with a certain headteacher!

I'll be joining you all later, virtually, for Star of the Week - when we could do this in school, altogether, it was a delight to see the faces of the children who had been nominated and I do miss that!

I hope you all have a lovely weekend - and that you manage to get out for some fresh air and fun!  Have a good rest and I will see you on Monday for more super learning!

Reading

Please read one of your Bug Club books today (or a few pages of one).  Remember to find the hotspot and answer the question so that your book moves into your library – and then I can allocate you a new book to read.  If you haven’t any new books to read choose one from your library and have a go at reading it again – this will help you recognise and remember some words.

English

I have read out some words for you to have a go at writing and spelling; the activity is on Seesaw and it’s called Listen and Write.  The words have the sounds that we have been practising this week.

Write the words in your Home Learning Book please.

Practise spelling you and was in your Home Learning Book please.

Maths

There an odd or even cupcake activity on Seesaw.  After you have coloured the cupcakes have a look at them.  Can you see a pattern?  Tell me what you see.  You can record your answer.

Reading

Please remember to log in to Bug Club.  Regular practice is key to improving reading.  Although we cannot send books home we are able to access the books available to us through our Bug Club subscription.  Reading the allocated books is part of our Home Learning provision and should be done alongside the other tasks.

English

We are recapping the grapheme ‘ee’ today.   The action is the donkey with his ears up.

Practise writing ee in your Home learning Book.

Log onto Phonics Play to see if you can work out the real and fake ‘ee’ words.

(Parents – the children are asked to read fake words as this shows they can read the word by partitioning and then blending because they know their sounds.  Real words might be see, feel, feet; fake words such as leep, peem, ree.)

Then log into Seesaw and read the sentences!

Create a habitat for the dinosaur you made last week.

Think about what he likes to eat – would there be enough food?

Does he need to hide from bigger dinosaurs which might try to eat him?

Would the ground be rocky?  Is it a warm place?  A cold place?

Would there be water nearby?  Or does he live in the sea?

You can make a model or you can draw your habitat.

Remember to log in to Bug Club.  You can re-read a book from your library today or read a new book.

Maths

Remember to log in to Doodle Maths today!

Today we are working on 7.  Most people learn to recognise how many are in a group if the group is 6 or less.  It starts to get a bit trickier as the numbers get bigger.  But we can recognise 7 quickly if we know two smaller numbers which make 7, such as 3 and 4.

So today I have uploaded two domino games to seesaw.  I’ve made these games and the first one is tricky – there are a lot of instructions and lots to remember – so I made a simpler version.

You can choose which game to try but I think the tricky one will need adult support so please don’t feel that you must play it – choose the simpler game instead.

English

Remember to practise your spelling words – they, are and my

Today can you write them in your Home Learning book?

You can take a photograph and upload to Seesaw to show me.

Today we are learning to read her and you.  You is a tricky word because the /oo/ sound is written with ‘ou’ so this needs to be learned.  Her can be sounded out h er and then blended back together but as it is a commonly used word (we call these high frequency words or sight words) we need to be able to read it on sight because it is used so often.

Find these words in your flash cards, or write them out onto pieces of paper or card and read and say them with your child.  Repeat this at different times during the day – and if you can display them somewhere for your child to see that will be useful.

After your child has read and recognised 'you' have a go at the Tricky Word Trucks game.  I explain, in the document in the file list, how to log in and set the game up.  You may select fewer words if your child is finding this hard, in which case you might select all the Phase 2 words plus they, are, my, her and you from Phase 3.    Perhaps you can have a second or even third go and see if you can improve your score and time!

Reading – You can read a Bug club book – or perhaps you can read one of your own books and show me on Seesaw.

Wednesday 27th January 2021

Hello everyone.  I would like to apologise for the error in the Seesaw post yesterday when I had put the dinosaur pictures and fossils on the example page instead of on the page where the children could respond to the task.  Totally my fault - but, as I always say to children - no-one is perfect, we all make mistakes - even grown-ups get it wrong sometimes!  But if we do make mistakes then how we deal with them helps us grow...and I know I still have lots to learn myself (but maybe not as much time to learn it in).  Anyway, once again, I apologise.  Mrs. Wilkinson.

There is a sentence substitution activity on Seesaw.  This is where you read a sentence – then see if you can change – or swap - any of the words with the words at the bottom of the page and still have sentences that make sense.  You can record yourself reading the sentences!

PREPARATION FOR THIS WEEK

Capacity - please save a few bottles or jars - ideally ones you can see through, for example milk containers, jam jars, shampoo bottles etc.  We will need these for Wednesday's lesson.

Also, for Wednesday's lesson we can make Playdough.  The ingredients are flour, porridge oats (the teacher in the video refers to this as oatmeal) and water.  You'll also need a mixing bowl, a measuring cup and a wooden spoon, as well as a table or worktop on which to knead the dough.

I would suggest you watch through the lesson video prior to Wednesday and check that you do, in fact, want to take part in all the activities.  Please be aware that, unfortunately, the subtitles don't quite match the words spoken.  Activities like this will help improve your child's dexterity - and they're fun! - But please don't feel you must.

This is the link to the video for Wednesday - parents and carers only today, please!

Tuesday 12th January 2021

Happy Tuesday everyone.

I hope the children enjoyed the learning about dinosaurs and are starting to learn some dinosaur names.

Here is todays learning - in a slightly different format than usual but it means you do not have to download the document to get to the links - hope it helps.

English – Today we are learning ‘th’. The Jolly Phonics action for it is 2 rude clowns sticking their tongue out at each other and saying ‘th’ – take a look at the picture at the bottom on this page.

Some children may be familiar with this sound – if so start with the Alphablocks work –  If your child is unsure they can watch Geraldine Giraffe  ‘th’ by following the link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6U354eD-hgQ&list=PLbLK9vA5SHxMngmNql2aUhhXRDlUD97za&index=2&t=0s

Watch Alphablocks ‘th’     https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OB43Qgu2Oac&list=PLbLK9vA5SHxMngmNql2aUhhXRDlUD97za&index=4

Draw 3 things which have the ‘th’ sound eg cloth path  bath  thick

Draw a picture of a bath and write the sentence ‘This is a bath‘ below it.      Please use a writing pencil to write with in your learning books.

Extension - In remote learning books write the words this that then thin thick with path moth bath and add the sound button underneath.

Maths – Watch White Rose Maths Alive in 5! Week 2 Session 2 adding 2 numbers. https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/early-years/alive-in-5-week-2/

Follow the activity from White Rose Maths – using 2 plates and 5 buttons to make 5 in different ways.

Use number cards to make pairs of numbers that make 5. How quickly can you recognise a pair that makes 5.

Extension – watch the video about making 5 and guessing what the missing number is  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0A5_8pbLfjk

Topic – Watch the next part of BBC Bitesize Dinosaur Discovery https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zdp4382/articles/znc3y9q

Play the T Rex part of the programme today and see if you can earn 3 stickers for your Dino Book.

Watch the PowerPoint with an adult and learn about what dinosaurs ate (the PowerPoint is in files)

Record yourself on Seesaw telling me about the food a T Rex ate and why we know this.

Monday 11th January 2021

Hello again. I hope everyone had a good weekend.

I had a message about  not being able to access the shadow puppets video last week. Sorry about this - I am not a technical whizz and I tend to copy and paste the IP address into the word document. I know, from when I have been in school, that links will only work if you download the document first and then click on the link to access the web page. Not sure if this will help but I am keeping my fingers crossed for you. If the problem continues then please contact Mr. Wilson - he is much better with IT than I am. Alternatively, try a google search for the item - I will try and make sure I put the full name in the planning.

Have a super day everyone!

Thank you again for the all the children's work. Hopefully it is getting easier to manage the different apps!

Have a super day and I look forward to see all the lovely work.

Thursday 7th January 2021

Hello and good morning.

I was so pleased with the work I received yesterday. It was fantastic to see. I have tried to comment on all work but a couple slipped through the net...sorry. Please help your child to read these comments so they know I am looking at their work and value their efforts.

I hope it was manageable for you. If not please let me know. I try to judge the amount by the time it could possibly take to complete.

Please note Bug Club is working again ( I hope!) I will set this as a task during the week but if you have anytime left try reading each day.... it really does not have to be the whole book - just a couple of pages - as some child are still finding sounding out difficult so keep it short and sweet so they enjoy it.

Todays learning is below and I will try to keep to this format each day.

Wednesday 6th January 2021

Welcome to the reception class online learning page. Each day I will add an English, Maths and topic activity for your child to complete. These activities will often be in bite size chunks and do not have to be done all in one session. It may be easier to do 10-15 minutes and then have a short break and then do another 'chunk'. The children do not have the concentration to work for long periods of time so splitting it into smaller parts will make it more manageable for them and you.  In class, I would differentiate the activities to each child's level but that is not possible on here so I will set each task at a level where I think most children can access it . If your child finds it too hard then maybe repeat the activity the next day so they become more confident with it. Please do not try and force them to do work they are not ready for. If your child finds the work easy then try to extend them by asking for more examples, using bigger numbers or more words to think of etc. If you need any help with this email me and I will do my best to help. Please date all work in remote learning books. This work does not need to be photographed and uploaded unless I ask for that in the activity notes.

I know there is a problem with the passwords on Bug Club and children cannot access the books. I will issue new passwords very soon.

Below is the work for today with the links to the online tasks they need to complete. Good luck!
